The Swiss canton Zürich is launching an infrastructure to support voting via SMS and Internet (The link is German only, I couldn't find an English article). They will be testing it in a voting for the collegiate self-government of a local university

This decision raises a few questions for me. Is SMS/GSM reliably enough to use it as the transfer medium for votings? What happens if a voting SMS gets lost somewhere? Will voters be informed about this? How secure is SMS voting? I don't think there is any encryption involved. How to keep track of the voting? There are no ballots involved, and we've seen how well this works in the United States.

Maybe this is just me, but voting is the one thing that I'd prefer to do personally even in a decade from now on -- no matter if I vote for/against fellow students or the government.
