If you experience problems when starting up Emacs on a SuSE Linux box using PuTTY from a windows box, you should have a look at the .bashrc of the linux account: The SuSE guys added some code to guess the right value for the DISPLAY env variable, which is pretty much broken when using PuTTY. Removing this part of .bashrc did the trick for me.
