Aaron Swartz announces Markdown, "a text-to-HTML conversion tool for web writers".

While it looks cool and the syntax seems to be as easy winking, I'm wondering how it compares to reST, which is "an easy-to-read, what-you-see-is-what-you-get plaintext markup syntax and parser system" primarily being used by the Python developers. The only difference I was able to spot is the tight integration of Markdown into Movabletype, Blosxom and BBEdit, but for everything different than using Markdown for weblog publishing, I do not see any difference to reST.
